The Role
We're looking for a Hardware Integration & QA Technician whose core job is testing new RGB and PC hardware products and using AI-assisted tools to reverse-engineer their USB behavior so we can integrate them into the SignalRGB platform. You'll work directly with Tom Specht (Lead Software QA Engineer) and our plugin/integration developers, turning "here's a new keyboard/mouse/controller" into "here's what it does over USB and here's the spec our engineers need to add support for it."
You will also be standing up the physical lab — test benches, PC/peripheral arrays, camera monitoring, and an inventory system — is real, ongoing work and part of this role, but it exists to support the test-and-integrate function, not the other way around.
Key Responsibilities
- AI-assisted reverse engineering: Use AI tools to reverse-engineer USB HID protocol behavior for each new device — identifying the commands needed to control lighting, effects, and other functions
- Integration support: Translate reverse-engineered protocol findings into clear technical specs our JavaScript plugin developers can build from, and contribute directly to integration work as your skills and our AI tooling mature
- Documentation: Track and document every device tested — what works, what doesn't, and open integration issues — so QA and engineering always have an accurate record
- Lab build-out (secondary): Partner with Tom to acquire and build out test benches (including open-frame/open-air rigs) and arrays of PCs and peripherals needed for ongoing testing
- Build monitoring (secondary): Set up and maintain webcams/cameras pointed at test benches and builds so the team can monitor tests remotely
- Inventory management (secondary): Log, catalog, and manage the lab's inventory of parts, peripherals, PCs, and test equipment (intake, asset tagging, check-in/check-out, condition tracking, reorder flagging)
Required Qualifications
- Comfortable testing hardware and software methodically, and documenting compatibility results and issues clearly
- Comfort using AI tools as a research/analysis partner to reverse-engineer USB device behavior — no prior protocol-analyzer tooling experience required, we'll teach the workflow
- Basic familiarity with USB as a protocol (device enumeration, HID basics)
- 1–3+ years of hands-on experience building, repairing, or testing PCs and PC peripherals (personal enthusiast/builder experience counts alongside professional experience)
- Comfortable using hand tools and basic bench equipment; understands and follows ESD (electrostatic discharge) safety practices when handling components
- Strong organizational habits — this role owns test documentation and inventory accuracy for physical company assets
- Able to work onsite daily in Billings, MT (this is a hands-on, equipment-dependent role tied to physical inventory and build servers on site)
- Clear written communication — you're the bridge between a device's raw USB behavior and the spec an engineer builds from
Preferred Qualifications
- Basic scripting ability (Python, JavaScript, or similar) — useful for both test automation and eventually contributing to plugin/integration code
- Exposure to SMBus or other embedded hardware protocols — not required at hire. We expect to grow this skill on the job as the role matures, rather than requiring it up front (keeps the role accessible without inflating the compensation band)
- Prior hands-on experience with traditional USB protocol-analysis tooling (e.g., Wireshark/USBPcap, hardware bus analyzers) — useful, but no longer required now that AI-assisted analysis covers most of this work
- Experience with PC OS installs, BIOS/firmware updates, and driver troubleshooting
- Prior experience in a QA, RMA, repair, or hardware test environment
- Interest in PC gaming hardware / RGB lighting ecosystem
